Undrafted NBA Free Agents 2012: Breaking Down Scott Machado’s Best Options
Scott Machado going undrafted was the biggest snub in the NBA draft, but now he has several teams fighting to sign him as an undrafted free agent.
The Iona point guard led the nation with 9.9 assists per game and was the 44th-ranked prospect on Chad Ford’s big board. Considering there are 60 picks in the draft, a team really should have taken him.
Behind Kendall Marshall, Machado was arguably the second-best pure point guard in the draft. Now that he is still available, the Charlotte Bobcats, Toronto Raptors, Cleveland Cavaliers, Atlanta Hawks and Houston Rockets are all reportedly showing interest, according to Zach Braziller of the New York Post.
Here the interested teams, ranked in order of which provides the best fit for Machado.
1. Charlotte Bobcats
While it’s difficult to say that the Bobcats are the best fit for anyone, they are the only team among the interested parties that lack a true point guard.
Kemba Walker is a shoot-first player who averaged just 4.4 assists last season, and the rest of the Bobcats’ guards are even more selfish than the former UConn man.
Even if the team decides to stick with Walker as the starter, he is currently the only point guard on the roster.
Machado’s abilities as a floor general make him an excellent complement to Walker and he would allow Charlotte’s shooters to flourish.
2. Toronto Raptors
The Raptors are paying Jose Calderon close to $10 million; while Machado will be significantly cheaper and has the potential to be just as productive.
Toronto is also rumored to be heavily pursuing Steve Nash, according to Doug Smith of the Toronto Star.
Machado fits the mold of these two point guards and is a remarkably efficient player who shot 49.5 percent from the field as senior. He also made 40.4 percent of this three-pointers and 81.1 percent of his free throws.
Either one of these two playmakers would be an excellent mentor for Machado. He would be an excellent choice as the point guard of the future in Toronto.
3. Atlanta Hawks
Jeff Teague has been solid for Atlanta, but he is the only point guard on the roster and the team’s future at the position is certainly not set in stone.
There is clearly a place for Machado on the team next season, and he could even work his way into a role as Teague’s backup.
He would be an excellent complement to first-round pick John Jenkins in the backcourt of the second unit.
Jenkins is a knockdown shooter who hit 43.9 percent of his three-point shots. The two would ensure that the reserve guards for the Hawks do not miss any open jump shots.
4. Cleveland Cavaliers
Machado will never be a starter with the Cavaliers, but he would be a serviceable backup to Kyrie Irving.
The two players are very different, but Machado is an ideal backup point guard.
He plays efficiently and looks to set up his teammates. With a few shooters to play alongside him, he could lead a potent corps of reserves in Cleveland.
If the Cavs need a player to spell Irving, Machado would be a perfect candidate.
5. Houston Rockets
The Rockets already have Kyle Lowry on the roster, while Goran Dragic is a free agent.
Even if Dragic does not come back to the team, they still have their three first-round picks to worry about. It’s difficult to imagine that Houston would have four rookies on its roster next season.
If Machado ends up with Houston, he will almost certainly have to spend time in the D-League.
He is an excellent player, but there just isn’t a place for him on the Rockets’ roster right now.
