The Magic aren’t cutting any corners financially when it comes to trying to win an NBA title.

They assured themselves again of one of the highest payrolls in the league this season—deep into the punitive luxury tax territory—when they matched an offer sheet to keep reserve J.J. Redick.

By signing Redick to that three-year, $19 million contract and also splitting the $5.9 million middle-class exception between forward Quentin Richardson and guard Chris Duhon, they pushed their payroll past the $90 million mark, more than $30 million over the NBA salary cap.

“We have the commitment from ownership—there isn’t a better owner in the league—to do what it takes,” said general manager Otis Smith.
