Michigan Online Sports Betting 2024

Michigan lawmakers may have signed off on legalized gambling in December 2019, but it took a little over a year to get online operations up and running. The big moment occurred at noon on January 22nd when Michigan online sports betting became legal and operators started legally accepting online sports wagers!

There are currently 15 online bookmakers operating in the state. Sports bettors will be familiar with many of the sportsbook brands as most of them have found success in other states that have also legalized sports wagering.

Michiganians can now legally engage in a full range of online gambling activities. They can also take advantage of the many great bonuses that these sites offer. It’s not just that the sports bettors who are excited. Online casinos are also up and running.

Sportsbook Team Partnerships

Detroit Lions

In July of 2021, the Detroit Lions reached an agreement with WynnBET as the exclusive sportsbook partner of Motor City’s football team.

The WynnBET Sports Bar at Ford Field opened this past season near section 222. The Lions fans who visit this section have access to betting lines in their sports betting lounge and food and drinks.

Detroit Tigers

In July 2020, the Detroit Tigers agreed with one of the more up-and-coming sportsbooks in the US, PointsBet.

At the time of the agreement, the Tigers were the first MLB team to come to a deal with a US licensed sportsbook.

Detroit Pistons

The official sportsbook partners for the Detroit Pistons are FanDuel and DraftKings Sportsbook. These agreements were finalized in November 2020, after the NBA bubble season.

In addition, WynnBET was recently named another sportsbook partner in March of 2021. WynnBET had an excellent campaign for Piston fans this past year called “Wynn Wednesdays.” On Wednesdays during the Pistons regular season, the sportsbook would feature rotating opportunities to enter and win several prizes, including team and player memorabilia, tickets and VIP experiences.

Detroit Red Wings

In January of 2021, PointsBet came to another agreement with a significant Detroit team: the Red Wings. In addition to being the official gaming partner of Detroit’s hockey team, PointsBet opened up the PointsBet Sports Bar at Little Caesars Arena, where fans can mingle with food and drinks and place some wagers.

Michigan State Spartans

In January 2023, Michigan State athletics completed a partnership with Caesars Sportsbook as the Spartans’ official gaming and sports betting partner. As a part of the agreement, there will be a premium seating area at Michigan State’s football stadium and an outdoor tailgating area for sports bettors and football fans.

Legalization of Sports Betting in Michigan

Soon after the Supreme Court of the United States reversed PASPA, Michigan lawmakers in favor of legalized online betting started putting together the framework. In 2018, a bill to legalize online sports betting was approved by the legislature.

However, outgoing Governor Rick Snyder vetoed the bill. Lawmakers went back to the drawing board and drafted a new bill that included sports betting, online casino gambling, online poker, and fantasy sports. In December 2019, the bill was approved by the legislature and Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed off on it, making Michigan sports betting legal, among other things.

Several Michigan casinos soon opened retail sportsbooks starting with the MGM Grand Detroit and Greektown Casino. There were ten retail sportsbooks in Michigan by the end of 2020. Michigan sportsbooks were permitted to launch their betting apps at noon on January 22, 2021.

Michigan sports betting will continue to evolve as more operators open retail sportsbooks and launch mobile betting apps.

Michigan Sports Betting

Online Gambling in Michigan

In addition to sports betting, Michigan has also legalized online casino gaming. This means casino buffs in Michigan can legally play their favorite slots, table games, and a variety of other casino games for real money.

Aside from sports betting and online casino games (below), Michigan residents have a number of other online gambling options at their disposal. In particular, fantasy sports and online poker were also legalized along with sports betting and online casino gaming.

Officials are currently working on agreements that would allow Michigan poker players to legally play against players in other states. Of course, many residents have already been betting on horses and participating in lottery games online for a while.

Michigan Sport Teams

Detroit Lions

Although the Lions have been struggling as a franchise for a more extended period, things seem to be on an upswing.

With a new regime of GM Brad Holmes and head coach Dan Campbell, the Lions appear to be heading in the right direction. The Lions were able to load up on some promising talent in last year’s draft with Penei Sewell, Levi Onwuzurike and Amon-Ra St. Brown. Hopefully, they can find a similar fortune after drafting Aidan Hutchinson and Jameson Williams in the first round.

Detroit Pistons

The Pistons haven’t been the powerhouse they once were in the 1990s and 2000s, but the franchise’s trajectory is positive similar to the Lions.

2021 1st overall pick Cade Cunningham is coming off a strong campaign finished third in the NBA Rookie of the Year voting with Rookie of the Month honors in January. In addition, after March, Cunningham averaged over 21 points per game and was asserting himself.

The Pistons will find themselves in the NBA lottery, but with a young star like Cunningham, other young guns like Saddiq Bey and Marvin Bagley, and Jerami Grant, the Pistons could be in line for a solid jump in 2023-2023.

Detroit Tigers

Like the two former teams, the Tigers are young and full of promise.

Last year, Casey Mize displayed why he was regarded as one of the top prospects in baseball. This year, the Tigers will look to contend in the AL Central with potential young stars Spencer Torkelson and Riley Greene.

As we move to this guard in Detroit, Tigers legend Miguel Cabrera was able to join historical territory: on April 23, in Miggy fashion, Cabrera hit a single to the opposite field marking the 3,000th hit of his illustrious career.

Cabrera is the first player in the MLB to accomplish this feat since Albert Pujols in 2018.

Detroit Red Wings

It’s been a long time since the Red Wings’ ridiculous NHL-leading playoff streak where they made 25 straight appearances between 1990-2016.

The Red Wings have been in rebuild mode as they’ve slowly built the roster back up with some formidable talent. Young talent like Moritz Seider, Dylan Larkin and Lucas Raymond appears to be some pieces that Red Wings legend and GM Steve Yzerman can build around for the future.

Michigan Panthers

Michigan’s newest professional team resides in a new start-up football league, the USFL.

The Panthers are led by former NFL head coach Jeff Fisher where former Michigan QB Shea Patterson and former 1st round pick Paxton Lynch are leading the way.

You can find the Panthers games on FOX.

University of Michigan Wolverines

You’d be hard-pressed to find a team as competitive in both football and basketball as the University of Michigan.

The Wolverines are coming off a strong campaign as John Harbaugh took home his first Big Ten title. In addition, Juwan Howard made Michigan’s 7th sweet 16 in the last nine years. The Wolverines also found much success on the ice as Michigan’s men’s team was the number one overall seed in the NCAA Tournament. They marched to the Frozen Four but fell short of playing for a national title loss to the eventual national champs, Denver, by 3-2.

Michigan State Spartans

The foe of the Wolverines, the Michigan State Spartans, is also coming off a strong campaign in basketball and football. Not only did the Spartans hand Michigan their lone Big Ten loss in football, but head coach Mel Tucker was able to cash in with a 10-year, $95 million extension.

Basketball coach, Tom Izzo, was able to compound another NCAA Tournament to his laundry list of a resume.

Other Colleges in Michigan

Western Michigan Broncos, Eastern Michigan Eagles, Central Michigan Chippewas, Detroit-Mercy Titans, Oakland University Golden Grizzlies

Sports Events in Michigan

Michigan is loaded with fans that enjoy a variety of sports. The Detroit Pistons, Detroit Red Wings, and the Detroit Tigers have all given their supporters reasons to cheer over the past several decades.

Even the Detroit Lions somehow manage to boast a fan base, albeit a sad one. College teams like the Wolverines and Spartans are hugely popular too. Michigan online sports betting sites offer odds on all of these teams and many more.

Then there are those major sporting events that grab national attention. There’s the Super Bowl, NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, the US Open, and many other prestigious events that are sure to generate an abundance of sports betting action. Michigan sports bettors are no longer left out in the cold. Not even Lions fans!

Sports Betting Guides

The sports betting market completely changed in 2018 in America when the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act was reversed by the Supreme Court. This act outlawed sports betting as a nationwide affair as states could legalize it independently.

Michigan was one of the first states to follow suit, legalizing sports betting in December of 2019.

For new bettors, sports betting can be overwhelming. There are a lot of different sports to pick from, the markets are vast, and there’s so much content regarding sports betting. It can be a lot for a new user.

We have you covered; below, we’ll go over the basics for rookie bettors.

Moneyline

A moneyline bet is as straightforward as it gets. Whenever you wager on a moneyline, you are simply wagering on who you think will win the game.

You do not have to worry about any other variables such as margin of victory, or if it is high scoring or low scoring.

Point-Spread Betting

While the moneyline bet is simple, the point-spread bet is the most popular.

The point-spread bet does not necessarily deal with a win or loss at the end of the game. Simply put, point spreads are the expected final score difference made by sportsbooks. You can either “lay” points or “points.”

For example, the Detroit Lions are taking on the Green Bay Packers at Ford Field and are 6.5 point underdogs. If you felt good about the Lions prospects, you could “take” the points with the underdog Lions. This means if the Lions lose by 6 or less or win outright, you would win your spread. If the Packers were to win by 7 or more points, you would have a losing wager.

Parlays

Parlays have grown considerably in popularity. While single bets are fun to make, parlays can grow your payouts exponentially.

Parlays are the combination of single bets under one betslip. If every one of your single bets hits then your parlay would be a winning wager. However, if any single bet falters, your parlay would be a loser.

Michigan Online Sports Betting Bill Timeline

In December of 2019, the state of Michigan legalized sports betting along with online poker and casino. Below, we will review the timeline of the sports betting bill along with some of its most significant provisions:

  • Betting on horse racing has been legal in Michigan dating back to 1933
  • Michigan launched the state lottery in 1972
  • Michigan approved Proposal E, which authorizes the construction and launch of three brick and mortar casinos in Detroit in 1996
  • Three casinos officially launched in 1997
  • Michigan’s iLottery officially launched in November 2014. This allowed players to buy tickets from a computer or mobile device
  • Michigan legislature passed a bill legalizing online gambling in December 2018. However, Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder vetoes it
  • Michigan lawmakers passed a series of bills which legalized online gambling, sports betting, DFS and online poker. Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer signed the bills. In addition, existing tribal and commercial casinos were permitted to apply for sports betting and online gambling licenses
  • First retail sportsbook launches in March 2020
  • First tribal retail sportsbook launches in June 2020

What is Geolocation?

Sports bettors and casino/poker players should be familiar with “Geolocating.” Geolocation is a software sportsbooks use to make sure you are physically within the confines of the state. This helps verify that you are in a location where it is legal to place a bet.

Because of Geolocation, users will be unable to use a sportsbook on a VPN. As long as you are within the state borders of Michigan, customers should have no problem wagering away.

Are Sports Bettors Taxed?

In short, yes. Uncle Sam will demand a cut whether you bet $1 or $1,000.

Sports betting winnings are taxed just like your regular income – individuals who make between $20,000 and $40,000 per year would find themselves in the 12% federal tax rate. In addition, the state of Michigan has a 4.25% tax rate that everybody must adhere to. But only your winnings are taxed!

So, for example, if you placed a $50 bet and won $25, only your $25 winnings would be taxable.

Unless you achieved a “big win,” you would not have to pay these taxes until the upcoming year of taxes. So, what constitutes a “big win?” A big win is anything more than $5,000 or at least 300 times larger than your initial wager. If you achieve either of these, gambling operators must withhold 24% of your winnings for federal tax. For all other smaller wins, no tax is taken out right away in most cases.

Responsible Gaming

As gambling continues to rise, bettors must learn the importance of responsible gaming.  Responsible gaming programs are intended to reduce and ultimately prevent the potential harms of gambling for its users.

There have been many benefits to the online legalization of sports betting. But with that have come some risks that bettors must be aware of. It is easier now than ever to place your bets instantaneously. It is paramount that users understand sports betting as entertainment, not another stream of income.

To help implement this practice, whichever you choose to play on will have responsible gaming tools that you can utilize. Let’s review some of these features:

Time and Wager Limits

These are pretty self-explanatory. Users can set limits on how much time they can operate the app. In addition, they can set wager limits on a single bet basis and a daily, weekly or monthly wager limit. Once you have reached your limit, your sportsbook will notify you that you have reached your limit.

Cool-off Periods

Sometimes, it is important to ground yourself and step away from sports gambling. When this happens, bettors should take advantage of cool-off periods. During cool-off periods, bettors are temporarily suspended from their sports betting accounts for a short period. Users should be able to withdraw their money but will not be able to deposit any cash or place any wagers.

Self-Exclusion Periods

Self-exclusion periods are more severe cases of cool-off periods. A self-exclusion period is when the user requests that an online sportsbook prevents you from accessing gambling services. In this case, you will not be able to access your account or wagers until the exclusion period has run its course.

Neighboring States

Illinois

Illinois legalized sports betting in June of 2019. However, the situation is a little bit different in the Prairie State.

Illinois was one of the few states where users were required to register on-site at a casino to verify their identity and age. As of January 2023, this is no longer the case, as users can create an account online.

However, users are not permitted to gamble on college sports in Illinois.

Wisconsin

This past year, Wisconsin has slowly made its first steps into sports betting. In November 2021, the Oneida Casino became the first casino in the state to start accepting sports wagers.

On-site sports betting is officially legal in Wisconsin, but there are still some hurdles to legalizing online sports betting in Wisconsin. But this is an excellent step in the right direction toward legalizing online sports betting.

Ohio

Ohio has legalized online sports betting and plans to launch online sportsbooks in January of 2024.

The battle toward legalizing sports betting has been slow and grueling for Ohioans, but the wait should be overcome by 2024.

This is a big step as any sports betting has not yet been legalized in Ohio.

Indiana

On May 8, 2019, Indiana Gov. Eric Holcomb signed HB 1015. At the time, the bill made Indiana the ninth state to legalize sports betting since the Supreme Court struck down PASPA in 2018. The first sportsbook was then launched in September 2019, and sportsbooks have been flooding in the Hoosier state ever since.

Minnesota

The only legal form of sports betting in Minnesota is horse betting.

Lawmakers have expressed a desire for legal sports betting since PASPA was overturned in 2018, but no legislation has been passed.

Despite recent efforts made by legislators since 2019, Native tribes are concerned that a legal MN sports betting market could have negative consequences on the state’s gaming industry. This may no longer be the case in 2023 as legislators are working with The Minnesota Indian Gaming Association to potentially bring sports betting to the Land of 10,000 Lakes.

As of April 28, a Minnesota sports betting bill, HF 778, passed through another House committee. The next step means the bill will be presented on the House floor. No other action has been scheduled at this time.

Michigan Online Sports Betting Summary
