Arizona Online Sports Betting

On April 15, 2021, a bill to legalize sports betting in Arizona passed and was signed into law. This means that Arizona will become the latest state to embrace legalized sports betting.

A bill to legalize Arizona online sports betting first surfaced in 2019, but it did not have enough support needed to be pushed through. One of the biggest obstacles came from the state’s tribes who were not too keen on the idea of sharing their gambling revenues.

The landscape changed drastically after the COVID-19 pandemic started. This led to increased unemployment and a significant reduction in revenues at tribal casinos. The legalization of Arizona online sports betting was viewed as a way to boost revenues as it has done in many other states.

New Arizona sports betting legislation was drafted and introduced early in 2021. Despite having the support of the public and the state’s tribes, the road to legalized Arizona online sports betting faced some obstacles and problems, but a few months later, the proposed legislation was signed into law in mid-April.

Sports gambling in Arizona is now legal. While several other states have taken a year or more to get the ball rolling, it appears that AZ sports betting sites will start launching on September 9, 2021. This conveniently coincides with the start of the 2021-22 NFL season.

One of the things that facilitated such quick implementation was Arizona’s tribal compact already having been approved by the federal government. The legislation allows for 20 online bookmakers and 20 retail sports betting outlets. Ten of those licenses will be allocated to professional sports organizations in Arizona while the other ten will be awarded to the tribes.
