UCLA picked to win first Pac-12 title (AP)
California coach Mike Montgomery’s surprise announcement Friday that he had recent surgery for bladder cancer and is now cancer-free overshadowed Pac-12 media day, when UCLA was picked to win the newly realigned league’s title. Kansas Jayhawks Picked to Win Big 12 in Preseason Coaches Poll
In the Big 12 preseason coaches poll the University of Kansas was again picked by coaches to win the regular season championship. Apparently the other coaches in the conference think the 12 scholarship players they have practicing at their schools aren’t as good as the eight scholarship players currently practicing at Kansas.
After losing six players to the NBA draft following last season’s Elite Eight performance and having three incoming freshmen declared academically ineligible by the NCAA last week, KU’s roster appears to be a bit thin.
With only two key players, Thomas Robinson and Tyshawn Taylor, returning from last year’s Big 12 Championship team experience obviously isn’t going to be a long-suit for the Jayhawks. Continuing the hyper-winning ways of recent years may be a challenge at Phog Allen Field House this season.
A difficult non-conference schedule is on-tap for the inexperienced Jayhawks, with the likes of Kentucky, UCLA, Ohio State and Georgetown. This means it won’t be easy even before the conference schedule gets underway.
But for now, the Big 12 coaches seem to think there’s enough magic in Bill Self to win an 8th Big 12 regular season championship.

Ray Allen: In 1996, the Celtics would have picked me with the 6th pick
If the Minnesota Timberwolves had not selected Ray Allen with the 5th pick of the 1996 NBA Draft, Allen said yesterday, Red Auerbach had committed to selecting Allen with the 6th pick.Allen had only worked out for the top four teams in that draft, but the top four picks came and went without the UConn sharpshooter being picked. That left just one selection standing between Allen and the Celtics.“I’m sitting with my family on draft day,” explained Allen during a speaking engagement at UConn, “and I’m ecstatic because before I came downstairs to the draft, I spoke to Red Auerbach. And he said, ‘If you come up at six, we got you.’ So in my mind, I was like, ‘Yes.’ I could still stay on (UConn’s) campus. I could play in Boston. I’m not leaving New England. That was my hope and my desire because I wanted to stay here, because fans in New England have been so great to me.“So the 5th pick came and cameras came over to …

Kris Humphries: Kim Kardashian Picked Perfect Man to Play Groom
With carefully-moussed hair, and a deep-V shirt that is worth more than my car, Kris Humphries sits, writing for the big day. He is the perfect person to marry Kim Kardashian, because he knows his place, which is just behind her.
The future Mr. Kim Kardashian is well on his way to matrimony. There is only a few days left of bachelorhood, so he decided to get one last breath of fresh air recently.
People Magazine caught Humphries in “the act.” By that, they mean he was enjoying a Champagne & Caviar party with five of his guy friends in SkyBar at L.A.’s Mondrian Hotel. Yes, if you really want to bro out, you must frequent a Champagne and Caviar party.
The report paints a cool and collected picture of Humphries, and he is. The man is quick with a joke, but hardly the center of attention.
He could very well shine in what ever reality show the producers at E! drum up after the wedding. More likely though, he will be background noise for the relationships real star, Kim Kardashian.
I hate to trivialize something as sacred as marriage, but my hand has been forced by circumstances. Those circumstances are the pomp that surrounds the most public marriage since the Royal Wedding.
This weekend, cameras will be rolling for the future airing of the famous nuptials. If you want overkill, stick around on October 9th and 10th for all four hours of coverage on E!.
There will be something quite evident in the presentation, there is Kim Kardashian, and everyone else. It is a good thing that Humphries is not a bellowing man with a brutish voice, because that simply wouldn’t work in the script we have all been given.
There is just one star in this fairytale, and all others must take notice. We will have a TV show to shoot this weekend, um, I mean wedding, and we must not forget the roles.
The part of the husband will be played by Kris Humphries. Please do not get overexcited if you know him. It will only be a supporting role at best.

Dennis Rodman: Chris Mullin Picked Wrong Year to Enter Hall of Fame
What? Dennis Rodman isn’t the only person entering the Hall of Fame this year? I know; it is shocking and hard to tell, but there are others entering this year. Most notably, the well deserving sharp shooter, Chris Mullin.
Entering the Hall of Fame is all about celebrating a player for a career’s worth of outstanding contributions to the game of basketball. And, let’s face it, when it comes to celebrations Dennis Rodman could probably make that Hall of Fame, too.
I don’t think there was ever any doubt that Rodman was going to let this moment slide quietly by. Nor should he. He should enter the hall just as he lived and played his career, flamboyantly. And that is exactly what he intends to do.
Check out this report of his plans from the Miami Herald (via HoopsHype):
Aventura’s Dennis Rodman told us Tuesday he will arrive at his Basketball Hall of Fame induction Friday by helicopter. He wanted to enter the Hall on a colorful float, “but they wouldn’t let me block off the street” in Springfield, Mass.
He said he will hire acrobats to perform and “a couple of my outfits will be ‘out there.’ Whatever might be too zany is not too zany.” His marketing agent, Floyd Ragland, said Rodman is spending $60,000 to fly in Penny Marshall, Howard Stern and other friends. Phil Jackson is Rodman’s presenter.
While Rodman was announcing his plans, it is easy to picture Chris Mullin shaking his head and saying to himself, “I was just going to wear a suit and talk a little bit.”
Mullin’s speech is about to be impressively overshadowed, but I am sure it will be fantastic. Mullin is a man that is never at a loss for words, and as time goes on, his moment will be remembered as that, his moment.
However, the 2011 induction ceremony is undoubtedly going to be remembered as the Dennis Rodman show.

2011 NBA Mock Draft: Every Prospect Picked from No. 1 to No. 30
No. 16) Philadelphia 76ers: Jordan Hamilton (Texas)
Hamilton’s scoring production improved drastically from his freshman to sophomore season with the Longhorns.
The 6’7” small forward also became more of a factor on the glass, something he will have to continue if he wants to experience success as a professional.
For the most part however, Hamilton has everything you want in a scoring-forward, he can shoot, follow his miss, finish and even make the pass that leads to a score.
Hamilton will have to learn to take better shots at the next level though as the defense gets tougher.

NBA Draft 2011: Jimmer Fredette and 10 Players That Will Be Picked Too High
It happens every year. A team gets drunk on a certain player, or a guy gets hot at the right time and rides the wave. Either way, the resulting hangover is felt for years to come.
We all can remember the Adam Morrisons, the Kwame Browns and the (gulp) Darko Milicics. Those teams have yet to fully recover from those draft selections.
So which players will tempt an NBA team or two into mortgaging their future on their tantalizing talent?
Here are the 10 players that will be drafted too high in this year’s draft.
