Chicago Bulls Sign Jannero Pargo and John Lucas III

According to Bulls.com, the Chicago Bulls have added Jannero Pargo and John Lucas III in an attempt to shore up backcourt depth, and especially point guard depth, to prepare for a playoff run this season.

Pargo is now about to embark on his fourth different stint with the team, and as commented on one of my prior stories by Jeremy Melendez, “is it just me or does the guy get worse every time he comes back?” And Jeremy has a point, Pargo seems to play worse each time he returns to the team, and last year his shot selection was terrible. Luckily, this poor play was allowed by Vinny Del Negro; but Tom Thibodeau won’t allow for it.

Some fans might support him as he has been a member of the team for many years now, albeit with a few stints away here and there. But it speaks volumes as to his ability in that he was a free agent and not on any team. Also, it is unusual for a player to have two different stints on the same team, four is ridiculous. Perhaps it could be the Bulls are the only team that believes in his ability.

John Lucas III played with the team during the summer and was widely supported by many different fans throughout Chicago and around. On Sam Smith’s Bulls blog, dozens of people would send emails in asking if the Bulls would sign him, since they liked him so much. However, he is listed at 5’11” and is probably shorter than that. Even Derrick Rose is listed at 6’3″ but in reality is shorter.

And the Bulls originally did not sign him, but brought him aboard later in the year only to release him to make extra room for potential trades. Lucky the Bulls were able to cut him, save money, and pull off that blockbuster trade for a shooting guard.

Lucas will probably best be remembered as the player who came in at the end of the game for his free throw shooting ability, only to be fouled and miss his shots at the line. That episode pretty much lost him the support of many of his fans from the summer, as he was assigned the blame for that loss.

If the Bulls ever need Pargo or Lucas to play important minutes for the rest of the season, it appears as if Lucas would probably get the minutes. Yes, Pargo has played for the Bulls before. Yes, he can sometimes make the ridiculous off balance three pointer he loves. And yes, Lucas is small for the NBA. But Lucas seems to be more of a Thibodeau guy in that he hustles, plays solid defense, and really understands the game of basketball. For that reason, if, please no, Derrick Rose or CJ Watson go down, expect to see John Lucas III in the rotation for the duration of that injury.
